O Shintai do Santuário de Tôshôgû sai em procissão durante o festival de outono (matsuri)


Na religião Xinto o Shintai (ou Goshintai) é um objecto em que se considera que o kami reside fisicamente e é o ponto central de adoração pelos fiéis.


O Shintai é considerado um tesouro e é religiosamente guardado no altar (shinza) localizado no honden, nos santuários xintoístas, de onde só é deslocado para festivais e procissões especiais, dentro de um santuário portátil (mikoshi).


Habitualmente o Shintai pode ser uma espada, ou uma jóia ou um espelho (kagami[1]), embora também se encontrem varas rituais e, por influência budista, esculturas (shinzô) do próprio kami.


Por vezes, também objectos naturais podem servir como shintai. Pedras, montanhas, quedas de água, e árvores (shinju)[2].
